Top-Notch Flight Instructor
by Virginia Watson, May 4 2021
I was fortunate to have Anthony (Tony) Cortese as an instructor during my student pilot training as a Plus One member. I learned of Tony through another student pilot (Larry Milner) and was invited to ride along during his flight instruction. The universe put me in their orbit because I struggled with developing radio communication skills early in my training. Whenever, Ground or Tower communication was involved, I would totally miss or stutter through calls before I started flying with Tony and his student as an observer. I focused on listening to and anticipating the communication between the pilot, ground and tower while sitting in the backseat and then started to fly with Tony instructing me. After a few flights, I was communicating more effectively on the radio. The radio jitters were gone; my confidence and overall skills as a student pilot increased dramatically. This new approach to learning, listening to and watching another pilot perform the skill objectives and debriefing with Tony afterwards was working. On the days that I flew, the other student pilot was watching and critiquing my flight maneuvers. I had finally found something that worked for me and was ready to cross country solo after a few weeks of flying with Tony. Soon, I was practicing the required maneuvers for the check-ride to prepare for the practical portion of the exam. During COVID-19, Tony setup ZOOM conferences to drill down on any topics he felt I needed extra support with. Tony, like many of the other Plus One instructors are busy professionals, but he sets aside time to make his studentsโ learning goals a priority. Tony is calm in his demeanor, masterful in teaching cockpit management strategies to help avoid heavy workload periods during critical phases of flight, encourages scenario-based thinking in flight to prepare students for real-world situations that require expediency in thought and action. He is tech-savvy, skilled at explaining the ends and outs of Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) usage in planning and navigating safe routes. Anthony (Tony) Cortese is a top-notch flight instructor and a continued resource in my development as a private pilot.
