Things like the big hole in the ceiling upholstery, loose switches, loose seats... it leaves you with an uneasy feeling about the general safety of the machine and a depressing feeling about the overall state and exorbitant cost of ancient GA planes these days. With that said, it didn't leave me stranded or show signs of mechanical issues.

Terrence is a fantastic owner and keeps his plane very clean, airworthy, and mission ready! The plane itself is very stable in all three axes which make it a terrific instrument trainer. The 430W GPS is a classic and everything you need for IFR flight with GPS approaches. In early 2021, Terrence removed the old DG and installed a Garmin G5. I just recently flew an IFR XC and this upgrade makes a huge difference. It's fully integrated with the 430W and the HSI provides automatic waypoint updates based on the GPS flight plan. Amazing! Cannot recommend highly enough. Go fly!

I was very disappointed to discover the Garmin 530 is in fact not a WAAS unit, contrary to the listing, as I consider that to be a minimum equipment requirement for IFR. I spoke to the owner, who followed up on my flight to see how I liked the aircraft. He said he was not aware of the listing problem, and plans to invest in a new unit as the next aircraft upgrade. The IO-520 engine is very smooth and powerful. Flying characteristics were a delight--pure Beechcraft.

The plane was amazingly clean, stocked with useful avionics, has a phenomenal autopilot and is a smooth flyer. The best story I have with the plane was with a friend of mine and his girlfriend. The aircraft was so smooth, she fell asleep in the back seat! I was also pleasantly surprised when Aaron left a note for safe travels, that was much appreciated. I plan on taking this aircraft to Phoenix and Sedona later this month, and I couldn't be more excited. Only minor complaint is that the Intercom ICS is a bit confusing, but that's me being very nit-picky.

It's obvious the owner takes good care of it, it doesn't have oil dripping all over the cowl, it has nice wheel pants, the interior is not falling to pieces.. just an all around great plane! Certainly making it my "go-to" now for single engine ops You'll note the other reviewer didn't put 5 stars for avionics, I'll also give it 4 stars. The avionics and panel are totally fine. It's just not sporting G5s and a 650/750.. (which would push them to a 5/5) but does a PA-28, or really any "trainer" need that stuff? The 430 works great. PS - for a 160 horse this plane climbs superbly well, that's one healthy engine!

Due to the seat and yoke position, my knees interfere with the yoke. I am happy that the electric trim is installed however, it is slow and I find myself having to use the manual trim above my head.

The fuel injected 180hp engine runs smooth and strong. The larger fuel tanks make up for the higher fuel burn over the 160hp engine in other Skyhawks. I also appreciate the cup holders and more substantial, comfortable seats for the longer flights. Really nice avionics too!

I do favor low wings and this aircraft's finish is excellent and that A/C was incredibly nice to have on a hot Gillespie day. Super stable in angle of bank turns and for this newbie's observation much easier to maintain altitude and angle of bank in a turn in this aircraft than the 172N I flew earlier in the day. I'm 6'3/250lbs so I was filling the cockpit fairly well but if I was 5" shorter and 50lbs smaller, this aircraft would be a perfect fit.
06/11/2021		9687J	4	5	5	5	13287	I flew 87J for the first time for my annual flight review. Pre-flight inspection revealed an immaculate airframe and paint scheme that rivals a brand new aircraft. The entire firewall forward looks brand new and the interior is in excellent condition. It's hard to believe this aircraft is about 55 years old. The avionics are outstanding as well. The dual G5 setup provides all the information you need in a reduced instrument scan space. The radios and audio controller are crystal clear. This airplane climbs very well and has great cruise speed and just a slight pull to the right. While landing, it demonstrated good elevator authority, but slightly less rudder authority as compared to its younger cousins. The windscreen is clean and still visible even when flying directly into the setting sun. My only critique is related to the design of the seat, seat rail, and yoke position and has nothing to do with the condition, rigging, or outfitting of 87J. The seat does not move vertically and the forward position that I required for full rudder control put my knees squarely in the way of the yoke. Hopefully, this won't be aproblem for you.

Avionics worked like a charm. Tuned up the ILS while on the visual approach to RWY 28R at KMYF and verified it works. Definitely a great addition to the club!

Fly it once and you'll get hooked.

DO NOT overprime her though- the checklist suggests 3 primes which is what I did on a COLD start as the checklist would direct. This might have been too much as I did end up having to go lean, and full throttle procedure in suspicion of overpriming with only 3 pumps.

In addition to the awesome GTN650, it has a very cool digital round AI/HSI with moving map - first of its kind that I've seen. You can scroll through HSI/GPS/VLOC or show the moving map. You can also set altitude reference, heading, OBS, etc. by touchscreen. I wasn't getting ADSB-In traffic, however, on the GTN650. Nice paint job. Great for the weekend hop! An AP, ADS-B flightlink from the GTN to ipad, and music inputs would put this at 5 stars on my list.

My biggest gripe is that I wish the owner would update the avionics. If this plane had a nice avionics upgrade, I would bet it would be flying its wings off. I am not fond of the hangar it is in but I understand there is little the owner can do because of the city lease issues. The Avidyne IFDs take a LOT of getting used to, especially if you are familiar with Garmin. Overall though, it works well and gets the job done. A little more TLC would make it a way better 22 but it works.

There is no COM/NAV 2, but I just use the monitor function on the GTN650 to pick-up ATIS and other transmissions. The engine monitor is a nice addition as well. The 180 HP motor allows excellent climb performance. The DG presesses too much to be reliable for IFR training but the value this aircraft offers can't be beat.

This airplane is very well maintained, and equipped with a WAAS G1000 and excellent integrated autopilot. The airplane's handling is very different from a Cessna, but something you can adapt to fairly quickly with good instruction. It's a very light airplane with a very lightly loaded wing. The great visibility also means lots of sunlight. It can get pretty toasty on a hot day. The condition of the airplane is far better than the majority of club planes. It's an airplane I'd be comfortable inviting my wife to fly in for a weekend away. And the hourly rate puts it in a reasonable category.

VOR and GPS are all 100% operative. I've flown on this airplane a few times to Catalina Island with 4 people on board and the performance is excellent. It is a little tricky during the first start-up of the day, but remember do NOT overprime and do NOT overcrank the engine starter. Read the instructions and you should be fine. So far one of my favorites 172 in the Club. It makes you feel like you're flying in a 182 but paying less for the hour and the fun.

Slick airframe and wings make it faster but a little more work to land than older Hershey bar wing PA28s. Exterior looks like a newer plane. Interior is nice and clean. Would recommend for traveling or taking new passengers to relieve some anxiety of flying in older planes. Will use this plane more often.

His hanger has a GPU, extra parking and everything you need to prep the plane. The power tug is a must for moving these planes by yourself and is always working.

They have WAAS and traffic and the data base(s) seem to both be updated monthly. Love the redundancy. Exterior and Interior are better than or equal to the rest in the club.

I owned a 182Q years ago, and this airplane is far better. Engine starts right up, runs super smooth. The avionics upgrades are all very useful and easy to get used to flying with. I'd wish for a better #2 NavCom, but that's a minor nit given the GFC500, G5's and JPI digital monitor. Bring your portable ADS-B "in" device--you can power it or any other portable from the panel.

The rear snaps on the cover are broken off, so cannot cover the aircraft after flight. Overall, good aircraft for local flights.

Tricky start so definitely chat with the owner or read the inside of the binder. Parking it under the awning is tricky at night given little to no lights. Interior needs love and so do side windows for visibility.

The guages are very accurate, and I particularly appreciated the carb temperature gauge. The G3X and radios work great. Could not get the autopilot to engage however, even after letting it go through "test" mode. The owner is very responsive and you can you tell he takes pride in having a nice aircraft for his pilots. I just hope the aircraft doesn't get treated like a "rental" now...

Also, I recommend taking a few flights during the day in VMC if it is your first time flying an aircraft with all glass panels, like this one. Overall, excellent condition, flies great, and nicely insulated. One thing that is appreciated while using non-noise canceling headsets is when an aircraft cabin can block most of the engine noise. The panels are also very intuitive, and provide reliable engine monitoring readouts that help keep suitable power through different phases of flight.

The photos and description don't mention its avionics, but this is surprisingly one of the better Archers in the fleet because of the Bluetooth and ADSB-In. A little difficult to start the engine, but it is otherwise a very capable IO-360.

Garmin GNS530 to at least see where you are in relation to airspace but really have to use those eyes to find traffic! Classic six pack was awesome to fly with, although I do find this plane a bit pricy for its avionics package. Climbed with 4 people and full tanks, 800 fpm. Will definitely use her in the future.

The pedals are light, roll and pitch are crisp. It glides well and trims easy. She’s an old girl though. Original seatbelts, OG Steam gauges, old GPS, dated appearance and upholstery. The old tech is quickly forgotten once it’s in the air. Great airplane for hopping around San Diego’s airports.

The GTN 750 just spoils you, and it's very easy to use. The only issue is that it does not have an autopilot, but as long you properly trim and keep an eye on it, you shouldn't have a problem. This aircraft is definitely on my shortlist of cross country aircraft.

That's also it's biggest disadvantage, it's absurdly busy and gets more busy as more people like me discover it. It's one of VERY few 172s in Plus One Flyers that don't leave me feeling disappointed at best, and deeply unsafe at worst. I'm IMMESNLY grateful to have this plane in that club for IFR training, finding it was the primary reasons I decided to start my IFR instead of leaving Plus One Flyers altogether. I was so disheartened by the state, schedule and cost of planes in POF that I thought I might just give up flying until I finish the RV-14 I'm building. The schedule for 733 is miserable no doubt, but at least the state is exceptional and the cost is reasonable. I wish the club would strive for the standards this plane sets. And thank you Randall for sharing this plane with us <3

Plane flies well and has nice comms (mic did keep getting stuck though), but the overall appearance definitely needs work. I was very disappointed that is costs $145/hr with 160HP and looks the way it does. Much nicer planes in the club to fly at that price.

Avionics are good (only improvement would be if it got a GTN 650 or 750 but that's just because I'm spoiled) and I'd be confident taking this bird on long flights. Just prepare to have everyone taking pictures and giving you a thumbs up when you're taxiing around, the paint job is a hit with everyone!

When we spoke to the owner about it, he was very apathetic and claimed it was just a normal thing in the summer time. It was only 78° outside. Certainly not normal. Definitely would not fly again.

This will be my new go to cross country plane! The only thing to note is that this plane does not use the standard key to start. Dont be a fool like me and waste 20 minutes trying.

I had a time scheduled for this plane the same day it came out of maintenance and I received it with 4 qts of dark black oil in each engine, missing POH and w&b, landing gear covered in oil/fluid, multiple inop items inside the cockpit, and multiple missing switches. This airplane is not airworthy without those paper documents (AC 120-76E - electronic copy cannot replace required paper documents). When something is so obviously not airworthy it makes you wonder what else is lurking behind the owner operated maintanence shop.

11/05/2024	Jeff.Heil	734NF	2	3	3	2	60771	I flew N734NF for 4 out of 5 days on a West Coast trip to get some IFR training time on the back end of a work trip. This is an okay Cessna 172 trainer, but a few items led to the 3-4 star ratings I left. First was that the right brake was very soft and it took 3 days and many calls/texts to get it looked at. The ELT battery was due to expire part way through my 5 days of flying and that too took a lot of phone calls and some arguing with the shop to get it fixed. In the end it was fixed, but caused me a lot of stress with no other planes to fly my week in CA (I joined/reserved this months in advance). There was also a seat rail AD with only 10hrs left at one point. If the plane did not have the soft brake and flew more, I would have been grounded on an AD running out. The engine sounded and ran-up well, but idled very low (< 500 RPM) and struggled on a lot of climbs (barely making 500 fpm at 4000 ft with 2 people and cool weather) and felt underpowered compared to other 160HP Cessna's I've flown. Lastly, the avionics may need some troubleshooting. The GNS430 WASS was not pulling in a WASS signal and the ILS glide slope was not coming in on the G5, leaving me to only RNAV approaches. The VOR was intermittent at best (we did not try a VOR check). I would fly again in a pinch, but N20543 flew really nice by comparison and had fully functioning avionics.

The 3 GI 275 PFD/HSI and 1 Gi 275 engine monitor are very capable instruments and along with flight director provided excellent SA and made IFR a breeze. AP was inop for my flight, but owner has been working hard to get it working. I will definitely fly this one again.

Paint is in need of refinishing, and there is evidence of corrosion on some exterior panels, as well as dings/dents on some of the leading edge trim pieces. The radios use cheap velcro-attached PTT buttons that are a tangled mess of wires. Overall, not recommended.

Bonus points for the two USB ports conveniently located on the right side of the panel! Highly recommend.

Just go take a walk and look at it. Exceptional paint job, exceptional interior, very well maintain3d. The glass isn’t cracked or sun baked. In short, it’s a plane you would take guests on and be proud to bring people along in. I also spent over 30 mins picking the owners brain. He’s very knowledgeable and attentive not just to the needs of the plane but the needs of the members in the club. When you think about value, THIS is value for what you’re paying. 08/02/2025	lakespookie	105UC	4	4	4	3	78640	I guess i shoulde not be suprised by this plane considering it was an aopa plane, but she is fast, flys well, is easy to trim and performs great, the 650 is appreciated she is a little limited for fuel and total load if you are heavier but if you are looking to build hours you cannot go wrong with this plane and the owner is responsive. Overall you cant beat the yellow bird for a clean simple and effective plane.

Don't let the exterior paint fool you, it's a decent flying plane and a good option from certain other questionable Plus One planes at MYF. The price reflects the negatives, so don't expect a perfect-looking plane for the price. Once you are inside, you don't see the paint anyway. All the important items for safety and flying are there and working well.

This airplane flies tight and stable, has top notch avionics, and can easily get 800 FPM on climb out! She’s well maintained, clean, and an easy choice for a safe and fun aircraft! Highly recommended!

Flies fast, smooth, and is reliable VFR/IFR platform. The recent new paint and interior was quite the upgrade. Owner is very helpful and the airplane has its own website to aid pilots on how to operate her.

01/12/2026	ahuynh1	105UC	5	5	5	5	78640	A fantastic plane! Very well kept on the inside and out with upgraded avionics. It's trimmed out well and flies like a snappier 172. The owners are so responsive and personally checked in with me before and after my flight to make sure everything was smooth. I can't recommend Yellowbird enough! Little tip: although there's no secondary radio, you can use the monitor function on the 650 to listen to a second frequency like ATIS. ("MON" to the right of "XFER" as you're typing in a frequency for COM Standby)

02/25/2026	demonguy	2989U	5	5	5	5	60814	The excellent avionics, reliable autopilot, and powerful engine made it the best Cessna 172 I have ever flown The 180HP engine allows me to easily take off and land at high-elevation airports with three friends on board. The autopilot made my journey from California to New Mexico very relaxed, without having to stay tense and manually control the airplane the entire time. Among all the electronic instruments, my favorite feature is Lean Assist. It helps me precisely find the engine’s EGT peak and save fuel. Definitely will fly this plane again

The engine is powerful, providing enough power to take cross country luggage and a friend and still climb out of high density altitude airfields. Next is the avionics stack. No need to praise the GTN and the AP I guess, but the multiple GI 275 are awesome. Especially the engine monitor. Also the option to have a VOR and GPS visible at the same time is awesome for various obstacle departure procedures involving radial intercepts for the first leg. She proved to be 100 % reliable on my multi day xc trip. Also the owner is very responsive and takes good care of his plane and the renters. Awesome :)

A well taken care of airplane that handles smoothly and isn’t overly complicated. Great for working on basic stick and rudder skills. Will be renting again! Owners are also responsive and professional.
